Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains the April 8 Solar Eclipse

On April 8, the daytime sky will turn dark across parts of North America during a total solar eclipse. For those who might need to brush up on their astronomical basics (present company included), a total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, blocking the Sun’s light and casting a shadow of darkness lasting several minutes for those in the path of totality (aka the spots with the best view).

With an estimated 1 to 4 million people traveling to get a better look at the black hole sun, it’s a pretty big deal.

Now, you’re probably wondering why this solar phenomenon is of interest to us at Jellysmack. Well, we happen to be partnered with the most famous astrophysicist on the planet, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and his media brand, StarTalk. Jellysmack has been working with StarTalk since 2021 through our signature Creator Program where we optimize, distribute, and promote creator content across multiple social platforms. And since we aim to increase our creator partners’ reach across social media and beyond, this year we launched the StarTalk TV channel on Pluto TV. The channel offers 24/7 programming of Neil’s thought-provoking, educational, and entertaining content about all things space and science, making it discoverable and consumable by the millions of streamers on the popular platform.

Who better than our friend Neil to explain what a solar eclipse is, why they happen, and what it’s like to be in the coveted path of totality? We’ve rounded up a few watch-worthy eclipse related videos to get you ready for the day of darkness.
